We encourage you to learn about the work they’re doing and to support them if you can. This list is by no means exhaustive, rather, it’s the result of research we’ve done to learn more about efforts to improve diversity outdoors and how we can do more to help.
#OUTDOOR OUTREACH HOW TO#
In addition to learning how to be an ally to People of Color in the outdoors, another thing we can do is supporting organizations that are working directly to make the outdoors more diverse and improve access for underserved communities like the ones listed here. We can collectively work to change this and to make the outdoors a more diverse place that’s welcoming, inclusive, and accessible to all – a place that better reflects the diversity of our country. The good news is, it doesn’t have to be this way. For example, low-income communities (which are often communities of color) tend to be situated in areas devoid of safe parks and green spaces, and many don’t have access to transportation to get away, nor the luxury of being able to take time off to get outside or the disposable income to buy hiking, camping, and other outdoor gear. Even today, many still face discrimination and underrepresentation in the outdoors, as well as higher barriers to getting outside. Historically, many communities of color were excluded from outdoor spaces and recreation. When we say that we’re working to “make the outdoors accessible to all” by breaking down the barriers of things like time, money, and information, we’re not doing a good job if we’re not recognizing inherent inequalities and additional barriers that many People of Color face when looking to get outside. The recent prominence of the Black Lives Matter Movement has brought issues of inequality and racism in the outdoors to the forefront and has made us question what we can do to be better allies and help drive change. Other entities received grant funds from the department, according to the release, including Empower Camps of Texas in Lubbock, the Ector County Independent School District in Odessa, the Boys and Girls Club of Vernon in Vernon and the River Bend Nature Center in Wichita Falls.As an outdoor enthusiast, you may be wondering what you can to do support diversity, equity, and inclusion in the outdoors.
Our volunteers receive no compensation except to Glorify GOD. We continue to enjoy the support of our local church, however this is not a church camp. All facilities and funds are donated and to date there are no paid employees. More than 5,000 students are expected to also take part in themed lessons on topics like water conservation, wildlife, hunting, fisheries, water safety and the cultural history of the Texas Plains. Outdoor Outreach is the result of these efforts. The “High Plains Experience Beyond the Classroom” program gives 60 schools across the Texas Panhandle the opportunity to interact with the organization which provides classroom outreach and field explorations at places including Caprock Canyon and Palo Duro Canyon state parks and the Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument.Students will also research native plants, trees and rocks while designing a “Calming Garden,” which would provide a habitat for local species. The “Outdoor Education” program provides low-income K-12 students with summer day trips to places like Ceta Canyon, Lake Meredith and Palo Duro Canyon State Park so they can explore geology, hiking, kayaking and fishing.Maverick Boys & Girls Club of Amarillo: $50,001.
Some of the money will also go towards six half-day “Hooked on Fishing Camps,” helping participants learn the basic principles of fishing at neighborhood sites. Activities include canoeing, team-building.
#OUTDOOR OUTREACH FREE#
According to the release, the entities included: All facilities and funds are donated and to date there are no paid employees. Outdoor Outreach believes in the transformative power of the outdoors, whether it’s through climbing, paddle boarding, mountain biking or another activity.
